History                                                        A brief History of our companyBuilding
First Class Mailers traces it's humble beginnings to the back room of Madison's first "Quick Print" shop, Xer-Lith Printing.

That company's founder, the late William "Bill" Hall, purchased some mailing machines to fill the needs of his printing customers. In the early 1960's a mailing machine repairman named Joseph Maul expressed an interest in purchasing Bill's machines and running the mailing department as a stand alone company. A deal was struck and Joe became a businessman. He named his fledgling company "First Class Mailers". He then applied for and was granted postage permit #1 in Madison. First Class Mailers has held that permit number for nearly 50 years.

Joe ran the business through the 60's, 70's and 80's. Around 1980 he moved the business to it's present location on Fair Oaks Ave. In the mid 1980's at the advent of the electronic/personal computer age, Joe retired and sold First Class Mailers to his #1 assistant, Glen Virgin. Under Glen's expert guidance, the business blossomed and grasped the concept and use of electronic information transfer and the use of computers. Paper labels were quickly becoming extinct. Glen expanded the customer base and sales soon surpassed the 1 million mark. Then in 1994, Glen purchased adjacent property and buildings and added onto the original building, doubling the production area.

In 1999, his goals having been met, Glen retired and sold FCM to his two top assistants – his brother, Bruce Virgin, and his nephew, Duane McGowan. They had both been employees for the past 10 years. Under this new leadership, the company has continued to grow and prosper. Sales now hover around 2 million dollars annually.
